The Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka has officially appealed to individuals, organizations, and institutions in Bangladesh for voluntary financial contributions to support victims of the devastating August 26 flash floods, establishing a dedicated bank account to channel assistance. The humanitarian appeal follows catastrophic flooding along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers that caused widespread loss of life, property destruction, and left numerous people injured or missing.
The August 26 disaster was precipitated by a massive collapse of glacial ice and rock that sent debris crashing into the Lhende Khola. This triggered a destructive surge through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, sweeping through vulnerable settlements and critical infrastructure downstream.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll reached 1,367 bodies recovered as of Wednesday, while 5,132 people remained officially listed as missing, including approximately 589 foreign tourists. Officials noted that only 102 of the recovered bodies had been identified and handed over to their families thus far.
In a formal notice issued on September 8 titled “Together for Nepal: An Appeal for Voluntary Contributions to Support Flash Flood Victims,” the embassy reported receiving an outpouring of solidarity from the Bangladesh government, members of the public, and local institutions. Responding to growing public inquiries on how to assist, the diplomatic mission established a dedicated fundraising avenue.
“We invite interested individuals, organizations and institutions in Bangladesh to join hands with the people of Nepal in this time of need,” the embassy stated in its notice, adding that every contribution would be deeply appreciated.
Contributions can be deposited with Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC under the account name “Embassy of Nepal, Dhaka,” using account number 1000028629 at its Gulshan branch. This public campaign complements official state assistance already provided by Dhaka.
Previously, the Bangladesh government contributed $1 million to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing relief and recovery operations. Furthermore, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed condolences over the tragic loss of life and offered direct assistance, while the National Parliament adopted a formal condolence motion.
The embassy stated that the dedicated account was created directly in response to increasing requests from Bangladeshis seeking ways to help affected communities. The natural disaster caused extensive damage across northern Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges, and infrastructure.
