DHAKA, Sept 16, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikrom, said today that Bangladesh and Germany are long‑standing friendly countries, underscoring the strengthening of parliamentary ties after German observers participated in the latest election.
The Speaker welcomed German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz, who paid a courtesy call at the Speaker’s office, reaffirming the close diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
"Both Germany and Bangladesh are fraternal countries in the democratic sphere," the Speaker said, highlighting shared democratic values and cooperation.
He recalled a period of public frustration with 15 years of Awami League misrule, noting that a mass uprising of students and citizens protested enforced disappearances, killings and farcical elections.
According to a parliamentary secretariat press release, the Speaker said democracy has been restored through an acceptable and neutral election following the uprising.
The discussion also turned to economic cooperation, with the Speaker emphasizing growing German interest in Bangladesh’s oil and gas exploration in coastal areas and the establishment of fertiliser factories.
These developments point to deeper bilateral engagement, combining political support with potential investment that could bolster Bangladesh’s energy security and industrial growth.
The Speaker concluded that the continued partnership reflects both countries’ commitment to democratic principles and mutual economic benefit.
