Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) on 16 September discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, including early steps toward formal negotiations on a Bangladesh‑EU free‑trade agreement, with the aim of strengthening long‑term economic ties.
They also exchanged views on migration management, aviation sector, and sustainable development, among others.
During a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Michael Miller, the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh, discussed the issues with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that he conveyed his warm congratulations to the State Minister on his assumption of office.
At the meeting, representatives from Bangladesh and the European Union said they were pleased with the long‑standing, mutually beneficial Bangladesh‑EU partnership and reiterated their commitment to deepen the multifaceted engagement between the two parties.
The State Minister expressed Bangladesh’s appreciation for the European Union’s trusted and reliable partnership. He also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to multilateralism, democratic values and a rules‑based international order.
He also praised the European Union’s constructive involvement in Bangladesh’s democratic transition, citing the EU Election Observation Mission and its backing of the ongoing reform process.
The parties also exchanged views on the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and said they were prepared to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest on the sidelines of the summit. Both sides indicated a willingness to engage further during the UNGA session.
The State Minister expressed appreciation for the ongoing humanitarian assistance provided by the European Union to the Rohingya refugees sheltering in Bangladesh.
Both parties said they are prepared to discuss the Rohingya question on the margins of the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly, aiming to keep the matter prominent on the international agenda.
The European Union and Bangladesh reiterated their dedication to deepening cooperation on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest. Both parties affirmed their commitment to further strengthen this partnership.
